1

Rope keepers

In some specific situations, there is a risk of the mooring rope slipping of the quick release hook. In order to avoid this risk a hook can be euiped with a rope keeper that prevents the rope from slipping

2

Remote release

All quick release hooks can be equipped with an electric or electric-hydraulic release mechanism.

3

Mooring load monitoring system

With inhook load cell calibration facility, locally and remote controlled ny our MoorControl software.

4

Self supporting

All hooks are self supporting. All movements are limited to prevent contact with the structure.

5

Integrated vertical capstan

The capstan allows hauling in of the mooring line in a safe and efficient way.

6

Explosion proof version components

For hazardous zone, in conformance with ATEX, IECEx and Class 1 division 2.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What are quick release mooring hooks?

Quick release mooring hooks are devices used in maritime operations to secure vessels to docks, piers, or other structures. They are designed to provide a fast and efficient method for mooring and releasing vessels, particularly in situations where quick turnaround times are critical, such as in ports with high traffic or in emergencies.

Quick release mooring hooks or quick release hooks play a significant role in modern maritime operations by streamlining the mooring process and enhancing efficiency and safety in port environments. They are able to quickly disconnect a tanker or vessel’s mooring lines in case of an emergency. This release can be done both manually and via remote control. Our quick release mooring hooks can safely handle workloads varying from 40 to 200 metric tons. The quick release hooks can be applied for oil berths, LNG Terminals, grain terminals, and mooring buoys, amongst other types of jetties and terminals.

What are quick release mooring hooks used for?

A quick release mooring hook system is used to moor ships safely and efficiently in ports and terminals.
You mainly see these systems in:
. Oil and gas terminals
. Chemical and liquid bulk terminals
. Liquefied natural gas terminals
. Dry bulk terminals (coal, ore, grain)
. Container and general cargo terminals
. Offshore jetties and single point mooring locations

Typical reasons to use such a system:
Safety: Less manual work with lines close to the water, less risk for crew and operators.
Operational control: Better control of the mooring situation, often combined with load monitoring and mooring control systems.
Speed: Faster mooring and unmooring, which can reduce berth time.
Emergency release: Ability to free the vessel quickly when there is a problem, for example bad weather, drifting ship or an emergency shutdown.
So the system is used wherever safety, control and fast operation are important for mooring.

What are quick release mooring hooks made of?

Our quick release mooring hooks are made of the finest Dutch steel. The entire production process is located in the Netherlands to be able to ensure the quality of the processes and products. We focus on continuous innovation but always ensure that our products comply with strict International rules and regulations. For instance, our quick release hooks and related mooring solutions are fully compliant with MEG4-OCIMF guidelines.

Are Straatman quick release mooring hooks in compliance with OCIMF regulations?

Absolutely, Straatman’s quick release mooring hooks are in full compliance with OCIMF regulations, specifically the MEG4 (Mooring Equipment Guidelines, 4th Edition) guidelines. What is the safe working load or capacity of a quick release mooring hook?

The capacity of a quick release mooring hook is the maximum line load the hook is designed to hold and still operate safely. This is often called the “safe working load”.

Some key points:
. Each hook has a specified capacity, for example, Hundred tons, hundred fifty tons or two hundred tons per hook.
. The capacity is chosen based on:
The ship types and sizes that will visit the berth.
The environmental conditions, such as wind, waves and current.
The layout and angle of the mooring lines.

. The hook and its foundation are both designed to handle that maximum load with a safety margin.
. The capacity must match the results of a mooring analysis for the berth.

In practice, terminals often use multiple hooks in a unit. The total capacity of the unit is then the sum of the individual hooks, but each single hook still has its own rated capacity that may not be exceeded.

Can the hook be released while it is still under load?

Yes, that is exactly one of the important functions of a quick release mooring hook.
The system is designed so that it can release the line while the line is still under tension, up to the rated capacity of the hook.

Why this matters:
. In an emergency, there is no time to first reduce all line loads. The vessel may need to leave the berth quickly.
. Manual release of a heavily loaded line on a bollard is very dangerous. A quick release hook allows release from a safe distance.

Some important points:
. The release mechanism is designed so that it does not jam under high load.
. The structure and mechanical parts are dimensioned to handle both the holding and the releasing under full rated load.
. After release, the line is free and can move away from the hook without blocking.

So yes: the hook can, and should, be able to release safely under load. That is a core part of the design.

Which options or configurations are available for quick release mooring hooks?

Quick release mooring hooks can be tailored to the needs of each terminal. Common options include:

1. Hook configurations
Single, double, triple, or quadruple-hook units, depending on the number of mooring lines, required capacity and available jetty space.

2. Line handling
Optional integrated capstan for safer and easier handling of heavy mooring lines, especially in rough conditions.

3. Release and control
Local release at the hook, remote release from a control panel, or group release for multiple hooks at once.

4. Monitoring and system integration
Line load monitoring, alarms for high loads and connection to terminal control or mooring management systems.

5. Design and environmental choices
Different foundation types, special coatings, explosion-safe versions and custom designs for unique line angles or environments.
