Solar power systems for ports and terminals
The idea for sustainable, solar-powered mooring dolphins was first conceived in 2013. Straatman received the request from a main port authority to investigate the possibility of powering capstans without power cables, in particular for dolphins located in open water. In close cooperation with the port authority we developed a design based on solar panels.
After a pilot project in 2014, the design was further optimised for installation and its size was reduced. Working lights and navigations lights were also integrated. This second generation of the design was then ordered by the Port of Rotterdam. Since then we have delivered our solar powered systems to ports and terminals across the globe!
Solar power for Capstans
For decades, ports have relied on underwater power cables to supply electricity to mooring dolphins and power energy-intensive capstans. However, installing and protecting these cables is time-consuming, costly, and involves significant operational risk. In addition, cables are often damaged by anchors or dredging activities. When power supply fails unexpectedly, mooring safety can be compromised, while repairs involve the same risks and costs as the original installation.
Solar-powered solutions remove the need for underwater power cables entirely. As a result, construction lead times for dolphins and berths are reduced, while maintenance requirements remain low, as proven in operational use. In addition, solar energy lowers operating costs and supports a sustainable port strategy.
Our autonomous solar power system features a robust design and can be delivered in an ATEX-certifiable configuration when required. If needed, the system can also supply power to work lights and navigation aids. Moreover, advanced telemetry enables remote monitoring and control, providing clear insight into system performance at all times.

Solar power for work lights
Solar-powered work lights can be installed wherever lighting is required, without the need for complex and expensive cable installation. As a result, ports improve operational flexibility and support safe working conditions around the clock. Reliable lighting on platforms and other critical areas helps ensure that personnel can work safely at any time of day, while also improving visibility for vessels during mooring operations.
To maintain full control, Straatman integrates dataloggers and a software platform that allows operators to switch lighting on or off remotely and continuously monitor the battery status and state of charge.
For the waiting area of a Dutch port, Straatman designed and supplied 36 robust and autonomous solar-powered lighting poles. These poles serve as work lights on platforms and bollards, ensuring safe working conditions for personnel 24 hours a day. In addition, the lighting improves visibility of signage, pole numbers, and wind vanes for vessels approaching the lock. Remote control and battery monitoring are managed through dataloggers and a LoRa-based software platform, allowing efficient operation without on-site intervention.
Solar power for SHip signages
We design and manufacture robust solar-powered ship signage systems. The integrated solar power system supplies electrical power to the lights that illuminate ship signage during nighttime operations.
For example, for this project, the customer required a reliable and durable solution for ship signage poles installed in an offshore location. Because the poles are positioned in the middle of the water, a conventional power supply using cables was not feasible. Therefore, Straatman supplied autonomous solar power systems to power both a beam light and a nautical light in an ATEX Zone 1 environment.
The lighting improves navigational safety by clearly informing captains of nearby vessels and helping to prevent accidents. In addition, the systems include LoRa-based monitoring, allowing operators to check system status remotely. Configurable alarms notify the customer when battery levels are low or when the system is switched off, ensuring safe and continuous operation within the port.
